Over 700 Boy Scouts from six different states will be completing Merit Badges on the Auburn campus. Merit Badge University, a two day event hosted by Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity will hold its annual program this year at the newly developed Ag Heritage Park on Donahue Drive. Merit Badge University (MBU) is a Boy Scout merit badge clinic that allows scouts the opportunity to visit the Auburn University campus and earn merit badges in a collegiate academic environment utilizing resources that would normally not be available on the local troop level.
Chewacala State Park will provide camping needs for more than four hundred of these scouts and leaders and will serve as the location for the Fraternity's evening entertainment program including troop skits, a campfire, and games.
MBU has a rich history at Auburn and with the Fraternity. Alpha Phi Omega was founded on the principles of the Boy Scouts of America and even though a scouting background is no longer required for membership into the Fraternity; the chapter at Auburn University maintains a rich scouting membership which usually includes several Eagle Scouts. Fraternity records show that Merit Badge University has been a part of its service program since the early 90's.
Auburn University Faculty and Staff participate in this program through the instruction of merit badges in an accelerated learning environment. This event gives scouts perspective into the college learning process and makes for an interesting experience. An exciting program each year unites the Auburn community through the participation of numerous community and student organization volunteers and scouting members at large.
Members of Gamma Phi Beta, Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Delta Pi, and Omega Phi Alpha have volunteered to help out this year as this proves to be one of the largest Merit Badge Universities ever. This event's reputation continues to grow as scouts will be attending from several states to participate in over thirty-three merit badge courses.
